Last night I worked a great gig with my friend David LaDuca. It was a big Halloween celebration for a large corporate client here in Houston. We had a great crew of a dozen Zombies of various flavors at the Armadillo Palace. As you arrived, you had to walk through a Haunted maze with crazy looking guys like the one pictured jumping out at you. Drinks followed, with a Zombie apocalypse and then dancing with a live band.
I have to admit I was a bit wary of taking the job. There were a lot of unknowns and I wasn’t sure how it would all shake out. Back in the day when I taught improv, one of the things we worked on consistently was our innate tendency to say ‘no’ to suggestions from others. I think it’s a built in protective measure in our DNA. Instead we teach how to say “yes, and…” To accept what you are given, and then add on to it. It makes for much better improv scenes, and I also find it to be a great life skill.
Dressing up as a zombie and entertaining people I don’t know for 4 hours? Man, that sounds risky. What if they find me annoying? What if I’m miserable in the costume? I say yes. And I have a blast.
